Using The Internet for Evil
The Viet Nam War in the l960's - 70's was the first conflict shown nightly on television. Today, ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham), which has taken large parts of Syria and Iraq, is using social media on the internet to recruit and spread their destructive message to all corners of the world. Even China is not exempt from this propaganda. In the capital city of Xinjiang province, in northwest China, radical Muslims from the Uighur (pronounced wee-gur) ethnic group killed 43 "infidels" in a public market place. China's new leader, Xi Jinping, vowed to tackle the problem with a powerful counterterrorist campaign "with nets spread from the earth to the sky" to capture the jihadists. So far, Chinese authorities have detained 380 suspects, convicted 315 and seized 31 tons of explosives. Hand guns have been issued to regular police, commandos patrol major cities 24 hours a day and access to We Chat and other instant-messaging services has been suspended.
Meanwhile, half way round the world in London, British Prime Minister David Cameron said "The people in ISIS, as well as trying to take territory in the Middle East, are also planning to attack us here at home in the United Kingdom". Security officials in London believe that as many as 250 fighters may have already returned from the region and could make Britain the next target.
Here is a sample of quotes from social media allegedly spoken by British-born militants.
- "The lions are coming for you filthy kuffs (infidels). Beheadings in your own backyard soon."
- "One day the black flag of tawheed will fly over 10 Downing Street and the White House."
- " I will embark on a killing spree against non-Muslims in Britain if I ever return."
- "Imagine if someone detonated a bomb at a voting station or ambushed the vans that carry the
casted (sic) votes. It would mess the whole system up."
- "We'll come back to the UK and wreak havoc. British people watch out."
Meanwhile Twitter accounts in English, German and Russian urge young believers to go to the middle east and help build the first true Caliphate. One recruitment video shows gun-toting militants, speaking with British and Australian accents, extolling the virtues of jihad and inviting viewers to join their fight in Iraq and Syria.
These are just some of the unintended consequences from the creation of the most powerful communication median ever known to mankind.
