Canada's trade deal with the European Union marks the best economic news for this country since the U.S. Free Trade Agreement in l987. Unknown opportunities are just over the horizon so how could this landmark treaty be overshadowed by a sordid political scandal in Ottawa? Probably because it reads like a Shakespearean tragedy- it has all the human foibles we can easily understand-betrayal, deception, scapegoating, arrogant abuse of power and cover-up. At the centre of this hurricane is P.M. Stephen Harper; the architect of the European trade deal. What a contradiction. Fantastic economic opportunities mixed with honesty issues-all in the same week. Perhaps Mr. Harper is the victim of the 7 year rule-no politician can escape his/her sell-by date Sounds ridiculous? Check out Barack Obama's popularity polls and watch his upcoming lame-duck seventh year.
