The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) talked tough at their summit in Wales, U.K. this week but fell short on action. President Obama, for example, thundered: "I support Ukraine's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity and its right to defend itself!". But he refused to honour Ukraine's request for antitank/antiaircraft weapons to fight the thousands of Russian regular soldiers who have poured across the border into Ukraine. The result? Outgunned, Prime Minister Poroshenko called for a cease-fire to stop the bloodshed.
Vladimir Putin must be chuckling in his borscht, astonished by the West's weakness. He now openly talks about "statehood" for a "New Russia" stretching over large areas of eastern Ukraine, and a land corridor running from Russia along the Ukrainian coast to Crimea.
NATO also failed to announce tougher economic sanctions against Russia. It did agree to set up a "rapid-reaction" force of 4,000 troops. Great. But why not also redeploy the thousands of American soldiers under NATO command in Germany to Poland and the Baltic States? This would send Putin a clear message - lay off our allies (Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania) on your western border.
Once again, the West has missed an opportunity to stop Putin's vision of a "Greater Russia". He now holds all the aces. The only question is who will be his next target?
